Helen Marshall's work is rooted in photography and lens-based media. She also works with digital media, performance, installation, sound and text.

Her work challenges conventional social documentary approaches and is centred on the private life within the institutional and public sphere it occupies. The work is technically ambitious and often deals with existing as well as constructed social archives, objects and compositions.

To date the work has been sited largely in the public realm and realised through a series of projects in galleries, mental health, medical settings, the built environment and curated events.
