London is the Future
A multi-media project by artist Melissa Bliss, with students attending the Post-16 ESOL Department at Kidbrooke School.
Through various excursions the project inspired the students, many of whom were refugees and asylum seekers, to explore the city of London to which they were newly arrived. Visits were made to the London Eye, the Southbank Centre and Charlton Athletic Football Club, as well as a trip to see a pantomime at Greenwich Theatre at Christmas time and ice skating at the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich.
The students reflected on these visits and on their own relationship to London through a variety of arts activities including photography, audio recording, and the creation of individual postcards. As a culmination of the project, an audio-visual piece entitled ‘London is the Future’ and featuring all the participating students, was produced by the artist and presented to the wider school community.
