In A League of Our Own
A participatory project by artist Jayne Murray, as part of Stream’s Peninsula programme of commissions.
In A League of Our Own set out to explore 'a sense of place' in the Peninsula Ward of Greenwich, as the area continues to undergo considerable change. Focusing on social activities and spaces, the League aimed to bring together people living and working in the area through the activities they enjoy and the places they frequent. Local residents and workers were invited to form teams and as in a sporting league, fixtures were held between different groups and places. Fixtures included an event for local birdwatchers at the ecology park, where a unique bird map of the area was created, and a social evening at Greenwich Millennium Village, where the focus was the screening of a film by a local resident.
The League season culminated in a pub quiz held at the Pilot Inn where local teams competed to show off their knowledge of the area. All the teams came forward during the course of the project, and the majority of the quiz questions arose from the research undertaken by the artist through her encounters with the people and places of the Peninsula and East Greenwich. An array of prizes donated by local businesses and organisations evoked a picture of local generosity, tastes and provision.
