Radio Stars
Young people from Greenwich’s Charlton School (Group 7 Community Special School) are becoming the radio stars of the future, making their own new radio programmes for online and FM broadcast across London and the world.
Stream commissioned experience sound artist Thor Mcintyre to work in the school with the young people to create new ambitious projects that explore sound as an expressive medium.
Radio Stars has enabled the young people to develop professional sound recording, editing and broadcasting skills, as well as build confidence and communication skills. The theme for much of the project was ‘the world around us’, and included journeys outside of the school to everywhere from Woolwich to Paris!
On Tuesday 14th July 2009 at 1.30pm the young people and Thor Mcintyre presented their own live sound event at Charlton School, Charlton Park Road, London SE7 8HX as a finale to the project. Guests included Councillor Jackie Smith, Cabinet member for Children at Greenwich Council.
During the last week of August 2009 the young people presented their own live FM radio broadcast on Fresh FM (www.freshfm.org.uk), Greenwich’s youth radio station, run by Greenwich young people and Stream, and supported by Greenwich Council’s Integrated Youth Support Service.
